What’s going on?!

Just saw the news on CNN earlier, a 7.8 magnitude quake hit China’s Sichuan province, and as of the moment there are around 107 casualties and hundreds of injured people, and the most tragic news is that 900 high schoolers got buried inside their school, and their fate hasn’t been confirmed yet. This is really horrible news, I mean what’s with all these disasters hitting all at once? There’s this cyclone in Myanmar, then a record number of tornadoes over here (and those sinkholes…). I’m really getting a weird feeling about this… if ever this really is related to climate change, I hope it’s still not too late to fix everything.

I hope the governments of the world will consider this a wake up call and do something about it. Now.

Five Low-Cost Ways to Cheer up your Mom this Mother’s Day

In case you didn’t know, Mother’s Day is coming up this weekend! It’s the only day of the year dedicated to our one and only mom, so drop your controllers first and make this day special for her! If you still don’t have a gift for her and you’re out of cash, don’t worry here are some tried and tested stuff you can give her that’ll surely make her happy.

1. A Bouquet of Flowers – Nothing says “you’re special” to a mom than a beautiful bouquet of flowers! Even if getting a grand bouquet is quite expensive, there are actually sites that offer discounted prices on flowers, just make sure to reserve some before the day itself!

2. Do Household Chores – If you’re still living at home with your parents, show that you care by doing your household chores dilligently. Forget about GTAIV first, go ahead and mow the lawn or clean the dishes! Giving your mom a break even for one day will surely make her happy.

3. Bake her Cookies or a Cake – For the culinary inclined, rather than buying pre-made pastries why not just make a cake or some cookies for your mom yourself? A personalized gift like this will surely cheer up your mom, and will actually be much cheaper than buying one from a bakery.

4. Show off your talents! – Surprise your mother by performing for her, whether it’s her favorite song or a piano recita. And make it better by actually including her in the act. I actually did this a few years ago, I played the piano while my mom sang to “Moon River”, and she still remembers it as a really special moment.

5. Hugs and Kisses – Well, if you’re really dirt-cheap and you don’t have any talents to show, hugs and kisses will be more than enough to make your mom happy.  Telling your mom how wonderful she is on this special day will show your gratitude for all the years she took care of you! So hug her, kiss her and tell her you love her!

When you’re driving around town, I bet you notice a ton of signs beside the road but you don’t bother to read them. Well you better be paying attention because some of them might be comedy gold! Some of the funniest signs ever come from road signs and what’s great is that most of them are not supposed to be intentionally funny. So next time you go out, try bringing a camera and keep an eye out for hilarious signs like these! Here’s couple collected from various sites that I wanted to post together for you guys to enjoy.

Probably taken from the Arctic?

An ‘Iron Man’ Mini-Review

So yeah, I watched Iron Man over the weekend and it was EPIC GEEKGASM. It really was a good idea for Marvel Studios to go ahead and make movies on their own rather than relying on Hollywood studios, and you can really see that they have total control over what goes on the film. Everything was spot on, the right actors, awesome effects and the right people to do it.

As an origin story people were skeptical when it was first announced but then again Iron Man’s origin wasn’t a normal one. Tony Stark was a self-centered scotch downing playboy who happens to be a weapons manufacturer, until he got hostaged by terrorists and was asked to make weapons of mass destruction for them. It’s here that he realized that his creations are being used against the people that he’s trying to protect. With him realizing his responsibility, using the parts he was given to make weapons, he creates the first crude Iron Man suit and escapes capture. Building a more powerful suit with advanced materials, he then sets up on a noble quest to rid the world of the weapons that he had created, and find out who was giving them to the wrong hands in the first place.

I also want to commend them for the excellent casting. Robert Downey Jr was dead-on as the alchoholic playboy Tony Stark, and the way he handled Stark’s witty lines were amazing. It’s great that Marvel had the guts to have a superhero like him come up on a movie that’s meant for a wide audience.

Jeff Bridges was also fantastic as the two faced Obadiah Stane. From the way the movie was structured, he doesn’t start off as the obvious villian, but gradually his true nature is revealed and Bridges does it menacingly so.

Gwyneth Paltrow played Tony Stark’s personal assistant Pepper Potts, which is certainly not the usual damsel in distress you’d expect in a superhero movie. In fact she was great as a foil to Stark and even a key player in the movie’s climax. And as expected, Terrance Howard showed that he’s one of the best character actors around as Tony’s best friend, Jim Rhodes. The foreshadowing for his eventual role as War Machine was also one of the most geektastic moments in the movie.

As expected the effects were awesome! I couldn’t even tell when they used CGI or not. Getting Adi Granov to design the movie Iron Man suit was pure genius. Surprisingly, even if Favreau wasn’t an ‘action director’, the action scenes in the movie were thoroughly enjoyable, and even unexpected for a film getting a GP rating. They definitely showed that unlike heroes like Batman or Spidey, Iron Man’s not reluctant in killing his enemies.

Clearly Iron Man was made with geek love, and it worked wonderfully. Thanks to Marvel and Jon Favreau for delivering a hugely satisfying flick. Iron Man is definitely the best comic to movie transition yet, and the sequel can’t come soon enough. Oh and don’t forget about the extra scene after the credits! Really sweet foreshadowing of things to come!

New ‘The Dark Knight’ Trailer in HD!

The Dark Knight has a new trailer up in HD! It’s precursor ‘Batman Begins’ set the standard for superhero movies thanks to director Christopher Nolan‘s vision, replacing the camp of the previous films with a darker atmosphere and a more serious, realistic theme. It’s no surprise that the sequel ‘The Dark Knight’ is the most anticipated movie of 2008 as I’m sure people can’t wait to see their take on Batman’s archnemesis, the Joker.

Heath Ledger’s take on the Joker is terrifyingly unbelievable, with his unsettling appearance and that freaky laughter. I’m sure a lot of kids will be scared shitless by him. There’s a couple of new stuff in the trailer too, such as Harvey Dent’s transformation into the villian Two-Face. I’m also liking the new Batman score though nothing’s still as iconic as the one used in the Burton films.

Another thing I loved about The Dark Knight is it’s excellent viral marketing campaign, it really helps develop the theme and characters of the movie and makes you feel more immersed in it. Well it does seem like this movie will be a even bigger success than “Begins”, and will definitely be one of the biggest movies of the year (next to Iron Man anyway :D)!

The Dark Knight stars Christian Bale, Heath Legder, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Micheal Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman.

You can download the HD trailers here.

The Superhero Movies cometh!

It’s funny how there’s a lot of superhero movies coming this year. As I said I’ll be watching Iron Man this weekend. I’m also stoked on the upcoming Batman movie as well as the the Hulk ‘sequel’.

I remember though how they use to make superhero movies. Somehow, it was made to appease the mainstream audience by somehow making them a bit darker and hyper-realistic, but somehow not being too mature and interesting since most of the spirit of the original got too ‘updated’.

Fortunately, I’ve heard, they took a different approach to Iron Man by taking the original mythos into consideration and applying it on the movie, as well as a lot of nods and nudges for geeks everywhere. I’m really hyped, I can’t wait!

I got some reserved seats for Iron Man for this weekend and I’m totally psyched! Some friends of mine were able to catch the screening and they said that it’s the definitive superhero movie, and that the translation from the comics the the movie was flawless. I bet we’re in for an awesome night at the movies, I can’t wait.
